Treaty of Waitangi - Our Inquiry Update

Tena koutou Ruma Rima,

We are coming to the end of our inquiry into  'Waitangi Day, what's it all about?'

We are all enjoying the different sorts of presentations you are sharing with the class.  Next week we will get to see the two plays that have been written by Hamish and Joban, and Sybilla and Biba.  They have been working hard.  Make sure you share your work with your families and get them to comment on this blog about them.

How did NZ change when the European came

• The Europeans brought diseases and pipes that made Maori die.
• The Maori offered land for materials.
• More and more Europeans came and there were less and less Maori.
• Maori started to marry the Europeans.
• The Europeans builded more and more buildings
• Maori started to learn how to milk cows.
• The Europeans brought animals including; cows, cats, birds and lots      more.
• lots of the animals scared the native NZ animals.
• Maori started wearing European clothes.
• They started  to have conflict or trouble and a treaty needed to be signed.

Pastel Techniques

Yesterday we watched the you tube clip to learn more about different ways to use pastels.
We learnt that there are different techniques to help us to:

• blend different colours
• blend shades (light and dark) of a colour
• create different textures with pastel

Pastel Techniques

We are about to develop our ideas for our 'Room 5 Bathers' drawings, and you will need to think about which techniques yoou could use with these pictures.

(You could practice if you are at school early, if you have finished your work, or if it is a wet  break time.)

Te Reo

Here are some of the sentences and words we have been learning in Te Reo Maori.

You could practise these at home and teach your families something new.

WALHT ask  and answer questions about who is in our family.

Other whanau words to think about :

•  matua keke - uncle
•  whaea keke - aunt
•  kaihana - cousin

Our Y chart 2

On Friday  afternoon something important happened in our class. We had to sign our names to our class Pegasus Flyer  Y chart. 

Our Y chart tells everyone what children in our room:

1. Look like
2. Sound like
3. Feel and make others feel like

If they are true Pegasus Flyer Learners 



As we have been finding out more about the Treaty of Waitangi this made us understand why we all had to agree to what we  were signing.

AKO is Happening!

Tena Koutou Ruma Rima

Congratulations to everyone who read our last post.  Thank you to anyone who added a comment about understanding AKO.   Thank you also to  the parents who added  comments.

 The challenge now is to SHOW our understanding.

I am pleased to say that this is already happening in our room.  Here are some pictures of AKO to prove this.

before school so that they know what is happening on that day.

Partners share ideas

Learning buddies listen attentively to each other.

Learning Buddies speak clearly, and keep focussed on the task
that is helping the learning.

Kip is really listening attentively to Oscar here.

Learners in Room 5 choose a place around the room
where they can best learn.

We make sure that everyone has a learning buddy so no-one feels left out!

We give each other feedback and feed forward.

Learners in Room 5 learn by reading.

We find a place where we can concentrate and go off
into 'BOOK WORLD'.

 Talk to your families about how you could get ready for your day of learning. What sort of things could you do:

  

a)  at home?

b)  at school before the 8.50 bell?

I really enjoyed meeting up with you all for our goal setting day.  I can tell already, that you are all enthusiastic learners!!  I am really looking forward to helping you learn more this year and also to help you become good at managing yourselves! You need this to be ROLE MODELS for the new Puriri students!

I loved hearing about the goals you have set yourselves to get better at: READING, WRITING and MATHS. We will have to come up with plans and ideas about how to achieve these goals.  Maybe you could talk to your parents about these too.

EOTC Week

EOTC week was fun!

Well done room 5 & 6 for completing a whole week of team challenges.  You survived and showed you are ready for Year 5.

Remember our key words were:
Listening Teamwork Safety.

I was very proud of all of you.

When we got up to the top of  Rangitoto we sang to Tamaki Makaurau and thought that Ponsonby Primary  would hear us singing and lots of other people.

Doing the Technology challenge was challenging 

because we had to make a free standing pole with a flag.

I found it hard to make the pole and the stand.

While we were waiting to go to Rangitoto we were on the bus excitedly! And all of us had a chinwag about Rangitoto and what was going to happen!

At Point Erin Environmental Art the most hardest thing was climbing up the tree to put the sticks up and finding the right length of sticks.

On Wednesday after orienteering we did a Technology challenge where we had to construct a flag post with only the materials you were given . You were not allowed to hold it up! We all found it a challenge.

On Monday we went down to Point Erin to do Environmental art. It was such a challenge working well in our team but we all had so much fun.
