Treaty of Waitangi - Our Inquiry Update

Tena koutou Ruma Rima,

We are coming to the end of our inquiry into  'Waitangi Day, what's it all about?'

We are all enjoying the different sorts of presentations you are sharing with the class.  Next week we will get to see the two plays that have been written by Hamish and Joban, and Sybilla and Biba.  They have been working hard.  Make sure you share your work with your families and get them to comment on this blog about them.

Here is one of our posters:

How did NZ change when the European came

By Ojas and Damar

  • The Europeans brought diseases and pipes that made Maori die.
  • The Maori offered land for materials.
  • More and more Europeans came and there were less and less Maori.
  • Maori started to marry the Europeans.
  • The Europeans builded more and more buildings
  • Maori started to learn how to milk cows.
  • The Europeans brought animals including; cows, cats, birds and lots      more.
  • lots of the animals scared the native NZ animals.
  • Maori started wearing European clothes.
  • They started  to have conflict or trouble and a treaty needed to be signed.

Thank you also for all your questions about Takapuna Primary's visit to Waitangi last week.  I will sort through them and choose a few and we will hopefully skype them on Friday.

I loved Jack D's question:
What did it feel like to be at the treaty grounds?

Make a comment on our blog - I am excited to hear your ideas now  about why you think New Zealand/Aotearoa has a special holiday on Waitangi Day.

  11. I think there was a holiday because it was the day the Maori and the Europeans got together and made a promise that Queen Victoria would take care of the Maori and trade some land that day the treaty was signed and that way it was a holiday. Aleeza . s
